Vermeer and 17th Century Dutch Paintings from the Dresden National Gallery of Classical Art boasts one of Europe’s top-class collections of 17th-century Dutch and Flemish paintings. In Johannes Vermeer’s Woman Reading a Letter by the Window (c. 1657-59), an X-ray examination in 1979 revealed that the painting of Cupid had been smeared out on the wall. It was hypothesized that Vermeer himself erased the image of Cupid from the painting. However, most recent research concluded that Cupid’s image was erased by someone after Vermeer’s death. In this exhibition, a large-scale restoration project reveals Cupid’s picture in the painting, granting visitors a chance to see Vermeer’s originally intentioned design. “Woman reading a letter by the window”, will be unveiled at the Dresden National Gallery of Classical Art, which is the museum that normally houses the painting. It will be the first public display to the world. In addition, about 70 masterpieces from the golden age of Dutch painting, such as Rembrandt van Rijn, Havriel Metsu, and Jacob van Leisdael, will also be exhibited from the museum’s collection.
